Nutritional Information Service (NIS; ) was established in 2016 and operates within IFR Extra Ltd ( The Commercial Subsidiary of The Institute of Food Research) and provides information on nutrient content of food products for food producers, retailors and larger companies to use in food labelling via a calculation service, software and/or bespoke offering. A business development manager is needed, for an initial period of 12 months on a 50% part-time basis, to help grow the NIS service.   The post holder will be expected to actively promote the business and manage the operation including working with two external organisations. Achieving the business plan targets for NIS may lead to an extended period of appointment.

Key elements of the role:

·         Develop a marketing strategy for the service.

·         Identify, acquire and retain customers for the NIS service.

·         Administer the customer relationship management system

·         Be responsible for delivering the service in consultation with the NIS team and external partners.

·         Provide advice and guidance to ensure the business model is viable and can be scaled up and appropriately managed.  

·         Monitor and report on progresses

·         Update business plan to reflect service development?


Other responsibilities include:

Submit regular progress reports to IFR Extra Ltd management and ensure data is accurate.

Ensure Prospect for potential new clients and turn this into service growth.

Research and build relationships with new clients.

Set up meetings between client decision makers and leaders/Principals.

Plan approaches and pitches. Work with team to develop proposals that speaks to the client’s needs, concerns, and objectives.

Participate in pricing the solution/service.

Work with NIS technical staff and other internal colleagues to meet customer needs.

Arrange and participate in internal and external client debriefs

Attend industry functions, such as association events and conferences, and provide feedback and information on market and creative trends.

Identify opportunities for campaigns, services, and distribution channels that will lead to an increase in sales.

Using knowledge of the market and competitors, identify and develop the company’s unique selling propositions and differentiators.

Ensure that data is accurately entered and managed within the company’s CRM or other sales management system.

Forecast sales targets and ensure target defined are met.

Track and record activity on accounts and help to close deals to meet these targets.


Key relationships


The appointee will report to the Managing Director of IFR Extra Ltd but will have close daily working relationship with NIS team members, NIS Management, and IFR Business Development team.


Food Manufacturers (UK initially), Trading Standards and/or Environmental Health Officers, Food law advisors; and partners (Nutritics and EuroFIR).


Qualifications and skills

Education & Qualifications

Degree level or equivalent (essential) 

MBA (desirable)

Relevant Experience and Knowledge

Experience in service marketing and/or sales (essential) 

Experience and knowledge of the food industry, ideally including food manufacture and quality assurance (desirable) 

Experience of project development (essential) 

Experience of a food science environment (desirable) 

Experience of software/customer interface development (desirable)

Knowledge of nutrition (desirable)
